Depression and Anxiety

Most people have felt depressed or anxious at some point in their lives. However, those who suffer from clinical depression, panic attacks and other forms of intense anxiety face a very different battle.

Stress and difficult life events can contribute to feelings of depression and anxiety. Psychological intervention can be helpful to process the thoughts, feelings, situations, and behaviors that accompany depression and anxiety. Many counseling techniques have been shown to be effective in alleviating symptoms of depression and anxiety. After an assessment of how depression and/or anxiety are affecting you, Dr. Slaviero will share treatment recommendations unique to your needs.

All people deserve to be treated with compassion and respect. Many of the issues that members of the LGBTQ community face are universal. However, living in a world that views people differently because of their sexual orientation or sexual identity presents unique concerns.

An affirming therapy approach in a safe, supportive environment is ideal for those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or questioning (LGBTQ). Dr. Slaviero strives to provide affirming individual counseling in a safe, comfortable environment. She recognizes the power of developing a strong sense of identity and community and is committed to helping her clients achieve their goals.

~ Career Assessment ~

Whether you are just beginning to explore your career options or whether you are thinking about a career transition, career assessment may be useful.

Career assessment can help you understand how your abilities, interests, and values match up with different career options.

Career assessment combined with feedback sessions can help you decide what sort of career you would like to pursue and overcome barriers that may be standing in your path. The majority of our waking hours are spent at work, so satisfaction with your career significantly impacts your quality of life. You owe it to yourself to explore your career choices carefully.

Everyone is born with natural abilities or innate strengths. They are different from skills, which are developed through practice and experience. Knowing your range of abilities can help you plan and achieve greater satisfaction in your career.

The Highlands Abilities Battery is a highly regarded objective assessment of abilities that was developed by the pioneering clinical studies of Johnson O’Connor. Superior to assessment instruments that rely solely on self-report, the Highlands Abilities Battery provides an objective assessment through hands-on, interactive activities that determine how naturally the underlying aptitude comes to you. The Highlands Abilities Battery is available online and you can choose to take the assessment in the office or at home after you receive your login PIN.

Dr. Slaviero is a Certified Highlands Consultant. During your feedback session Dr. Slaviero will interpret the results and explain your unique patterns and clusters of abilities. You will receive an individualized report that describes your unique ability profile. Once you understand your ability profile, you will explore how your unique combination of abilities relates to career options.

The results of the Highlands Abilities Battery will be most useful in combination with additional assessment. The most important part of the process is integrating information about abilities, interests, values and personality style and exploring how this information can help guide you toward a satisfying career.

~ Career Values ~

Values are enduring beliefs and ideas that are important to you. In fact, values may be the most important guiding principles that help you set priorities in your personal and work life. Values often guide how we set goals and make decisions. Identifying which values matter most to you in a work setting is extremely useful because it helps clarify what career might be a “good fit” for you. When you are engaged in work that is consistent with your values, you are more likely to find your work meaningful and satisfying.

Each of us has our own constellation of values that guide us. I will help you identify which values are the most important to you through an interactive Career Values Assessment. During the feedback session, we will discuss how these values relate to many other factors that influence your career exploration and can ultimately assist you in finding a satisfying career path.

~ Interests ~

Interests are another crucial component of career satisfaction. Many people make decisions about which career to pursue based purely on what fields of study or jobs seem interesting to them. The careful examination of which interests relate to specific jobs is essential, yet many people lack the information to make these evaluations.

Extensive research has been conducted to explore how interests and personality style relate to job satisfaction. The results of this systematic approach yielded objective evidence about what personality styles and interests are a good fit with specific jobs in various career fields.

Interest Inventories are based on these research results and provide a valid, systematic approach to guide your career choices. I will select the Interest Inventory that is right for you. After you complete the assessment, I will explain how your personality style relates to your interests. Then we will discuss how this information is related to specific jobs for which you might be well suited.

~ Feedback Sessions ~

An initial session is conducted in order to establish your goals for career assessment and gather background information that will help apply the results of the assessment to your unique situation. A feedback session will be scheduled after each assessment. This allows me to interpret the assessment and to engage you in a discussion of how the results apply to you. A final session will help you to integrate the valuable knowledge you gained through the career assessment process. Together, we will create a specific action plan that identifies the next steps necessary to making a decision about your career.

Additional sessions are available if you would like me to provide a more extensive, in depth analysis of your results and spend more time helping you formulate your action plan. Once the assessment process is complete, you will be well on your way to finding a career that is the best possible fit for you!
